The birds in this painting are the descendants of a group of parakeets that escaped an aviary or pet shop years ago in London. There were various theories over the years about where the parakeets to be in London; some say a they escaped from a zoo, others say from a pet shop and even a filming studio in Ealing. The birds then multiplied and spread around London. One rumour had it that the current parakeets descend from a couple Jimi Hendrix released in Carnaby Street in the 60's although that seems to have been disproved (still a cool story though!)

Most experts believe they escaped from an aviary in the 60s-70s.

These beautiful creatures can be spotted in parks in and around London. There are a few that have made their home in Morden Hall Park near where I live. They are such lovely colourful birds and, like urban foxes, are a common sight in London suburbs.

The parakeets are painted on three separate layers of art glass which have been mounted with a 5mm gap between panel to create 3D effect.
