Deer are the first animals I did when I started painting wildlife in 2014, so they hold a special place for me. My favourite are roe deer and there were a few around where I grew up in France. This is a lovely little piece that reminds me both of Spring and Autumn as the snowdrops typically come out at the end of winter and the stag’s colours is very autumnal. I love the contrast of the deer’s red-brown coat against the tender greens of the meadow. The snowdrop petals are also mirrored in the white dots on stag’s back which I think is a lovely detail, like animal and plants are part of the same whole.

The stag and part of the snowdrops are painted on the back layer of glass and the majority of the flowers are on a separate glass on top. A third layer of blank glass encases them in the frame.
