This piece is part of a new collection of paintings on glass I started developing in January 2020. I usually paint wildlife and female figures in a simple flowing style on canvas. I recently made the transition to glass when I acquired perspex sheets from a fellow artist who was clearing out their studio; perspex is a wonderful surface to work on but I soon realised glass was a better option for aesthetic and practical reasons. I aim to create bright and airy looking pieces and as I don't usually add a background to my works, I find the transparency of the glass adds a new dimension to the pieces. Two of my main inspirations are Prehistoric Cave Art and literature, specifically children's book illustration which was one of the themes for my Masters degree memoir. Prehistoric Cave Art fascinates me because it is one of the earliest recorded forms of human creative expression; this interest was further solidified by a trip to the famous Lascaux caves in central France where some beautiful examples of these early paintings can be seen. Growing up in a literary family, I developed early on a passion for books and worked in publishing for a few years when I first moved to London from France. This piece is inspired by The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling. I painted the tiger and foliage on two separate sheets of museum grade glass. I wanted the tiger to look as if it's emerging from the bushes, stalking its prey. The piece is framed with a centimetre gap between both sheets of glass to allow space and room for shadows to form and fall against the wall.
