Cranes ad herons are animals I seem to come back to regularly, I love painting them; they are such graceful and peaceful looking creatures. For some reason they always inspire a sense of calm in me. Being attracted to myth and legends, I of course am drawn to the meaning of cranes in the Japanese culture. It’s said that folding a thousand paper origami cranes will bring you a long life and good fortune. In western folklore, as a way of explaining where babies come from to small children, parents say that babies are brought to their new families by storks. So cranes and birds of that family are generally seen as symbols of luck, health and good fortune.

I absolutely enjoyed painting this crane; I love the calm and soothing colours. I reproduced the background pattern from a blue piece of fabric I had at home which I love (I enjoy sewing occasionally in my spare time). The pattern reminds me of the French Rococo style of painting which I loved studying at university. It is also inspired the title of the artwork.

Rococo Blue is painted on two separate layers of art glass which have been mounted with a 1cm gap between panel to create 3D effect.
